Domain transfers
Avaloi does not transfer domains in or out yet. Learn what to do today and how the transfer scope is already protected.
This feature is not built yet. This article says what works today.
Domain transfers are not built. You cannot transfer a domain into Avaloi or out of Avaloi yet, because Avaloi does not register domains. This article tells you what to do today and what transfers will add when they arrive.
What to do today
A domain transfer moves the registration from one registrar to another. Since Avaloi is not a registrar yet, there is nothing to transfer to or from. Your domain stays with its current registrar, and you point it at Avaloi instead.
Move a site to Avaloi without moving the registration
- Keep the domain at its registrar.
- Either host the DNS on Cloudflare DNS, or keep the DNS at the registrar and add the records Avaloi shows. See Domain registration for both paths.
- Add the domain to your site from the Domains tab.
The site moves to Avaloi. The registration does not need to move at all.
Move a domain between registrars today
If you want to change registrars, do it between the two registrars as usual: unlock the domain, get the authorization code from the old registrar, and start the transfer at the new one. Nothing about Avaloi changes. If the DNS is on Cloudflare DNS, keep the Avaloi nameservers set at the new registrar, and the zone keeps working through the transfer.
The transfer scope
The API scope domains:transfer_out already exists. It is a restricted scope: an API key that carries it needs an expiry. No route uses the scope yet, so a key that carries it can do nothing with it today. The protection is in place for when transfers out ship. See API keys and scopes.
Quick answers
Can I transfer my domain to Avaloi? Not yet. Keep it at your registrar and point it at Avaloi.
Will moving to Avaloi lock my domain in? No. The registration stays with your registrar, and the records of a Cloudflare DNS zone are readable through the API at any time.
Why does the scope list show domains:transfer_out?
The scope exists and is restricted, but no route uses it until transfers ship.
Not yet
Transfers in will let you move a registered domain to Avaloi with its authorization code, then attach it to a site. Transfers out will let you release a domain Avaloi registered to another registrar, and the API route for it will need the domains:transfer_out scope and a key expiry. This article changes when transfers ship.
