Mail problems: messages from WordPress do not arrive

Find out why WordPress mail is not arriving: check the Mail tab for captured messages, check the domain's SPF and DKIM records, and check the spam folder of the recipient.

Parts of this feature are still being built. The Not yet section lists them.

Mail from WordPress, such as order emails, password resets, and contact forms, goes through the site's mail setup. On a site that is not live yet, Avaloi captures every message instead of sending it, so nothing leaves the environment. On a live site, mail can still fail to arrive because of the sending domain's records or the recipient's spam filter. Find out which case you have first.

What you see

  • A form or an order email never reaches the recipient, and WordPress shows no error.
  • Password reset emails arrive in spam, or not at all.
  • Mail arrives for a while, then stops after a change to the domain.

Check these first

  1. Check the Mail tab. Open the site, then Mail, and look at the captured messages. If the message is there, WordPress sent it and Avaloi held it because the environment is not live. Open it to check the content and the recipient. Captured messages do not leave the environment.
  2. Check the mail settings. On the Mail tab, check the rate limit and whether the environment is set to capture. A rate limit that is too low holds messages back.
  3. Check the domain's records. Open Domains or Cloudflare DNS. Mail needs an SPF record that lists the sending service, and a DKIM record that the sending service gives you. A missing or wrong SPF record causes mail to be rejected or sent to spam.
  4. Check the recipient's spam folder. Ask the recipient to search for the sender address. A message in spam with a warning about authentication points to the records in step 3.

Fix it

  • If the message is captured and you want it sent, the environment must be live, and the mail setup must be finished for that domain. Set the records first, then ask support to turn on sending for the domain.
  • If SPF or DKIM is missing, add the record the mail settings show, then wait for it to spread before you test again.
  • If messages go to spam, add a DMARC record, start with a policy of none so you can read the reports, and keep the sending address the same.
  • If a single form emails the wrong address, change the address in the plugin's settings, then send a test message from the Mail tab.

Not yet

  • Sending through a mail relay on a live site is not finished. The sending log is not built, so you cannot yet see each message that was sent and its result. The route exists but returns nothing until the relay and a mail provider are in place.
  • Avaloi does not yet publish SPF and DKIM records for every domain automatically. Add the records you are given.
